Sam Altman Just Confirmed OpenAI Is Building a Humanoid Robot — 'Everyone Should Have One'

For years, Sam Altman dodged the question. Not anymore. On the September 1 episode of the Sources Podcast with Alex Heath, OpenAI's CEO said, without qualification, that the company is building a humanoid robot — and he laid out exactly why the human body is the shape that makes sense.

What Altman Actually Said

Asked whether OpenAI's robotics push meant a humanoid machine or something built for data centers, Altman didn't pick one. "Both," he said. "We will definitely do a humanoid. We will do other form factors as well."

That's a notable shift. OpenAI has talked about robotics ambitions before, mostly in the context of the "brain" — the AI models that would eventually drive physical machines. This is the first time Altman has committed, on the record, to OpenAI building humanoid hardware itself rather than just supplying the intelligence layer for someone else's robot.

Bodies Come Second to Brains

Even so, Altman was clear about where OpenAI's priorities sit. "I think all of that is less important than really figuring out like the brain that makes the robot work," he said, suggesting the hard problem isn't actuators or joints — it's the physical reasoning and control models that let a robot act competently in the real world.

Why the Human Form Factor Wins

Altman's case for going humanoid is essentially an argument about infrastructure. "The world is very much designed for people," he said. "So if you think about like the ability to open a door and type on a computer and drive a piece of equipment and, you know, clean a kitchen and whatever else, we've kind of built this world for people, and I want to make sure that we keep building this world for people. So matching that form factor seems good."

In other words: doorknobs, stairs, keyboards, steering wheels, and kitchen counters were all built for human hands, human height, and human reach. A robot shaped like us can use the world as-is, without retrofitting every building and tool around it. That's also why Altman said OpenAI would still build non-humanoid machines for specialized settings — "there will of course be data center robots that have like different form factors" — where a different shape is simply more efficient.

Home Robots Can Wait

Altman's bigger claim — "I think everyone should have a personal robot" — sounds like a consumer pitch. But he immediately tempered it. Asked about robots in the home, he said plainly: "I don't think that's the most important first thing to do." Industrial and commercial deployments come first; the household humanoid is a long-term vision, not a near-term roadmap.

The Competition OpenAI Is Walking Into

OpenAI isn't entering an empty field. Tesla's Optimus, Figure, and Boston Dynamics are all already building and testing humanoid robots, giving OpenAI multiple well-funded rivals with a head start on hardware.

The China Problem

A bigger complication may be supply chains rather than rivals. According to reporting on OpenMind's 2026 Physical AI Readiness Index, a humanoid robot built without Chinese suppliers costs roughly $131,000 — nearly triple the roughly $46,000 it costs when built through standard supply chains that run through China. The gap comes down to actuators, the motors that drive a robot's joints, which make up an estimated 40% to 60% of a humanoid's total build cost and depend on rare-earth magnets refined predominantly in China. Any U.S. company building humanoid hardware at scale, OpenAI included, is going to be exposed to that dependency.
